New at the Berden Hike: the 40 kilometers!

Finn Alberts

The Berden Hike has been known for years for its beautiful routes through the North Limburg landscape. Walkers can choose from distances of 7.5, 16, and 25 kilometers, each with its own character and experience. This year, something new is added: for the first time, you can also walk 40 kilometers.

With this new distance, we’re expanding the hike for true long-distance enthusiasts. The 40 kilometers is designed for dedicated walkers who aren’t afraid of a serious challenge and enjoy spending a full day on the move in one of Limburg’s most beautiful regions.

A distance for everyone

The strength of the Berden Hike lies in its variety.

The 7.5-kilometer route is perfect for families, beginner walkers, and anyone who wants to enjoy nature at a relaxed pace. This route takes you through the picturesque Jaomerdal, past old clay pits and quiet paths, with a welcoming rest stop along the way.

If you’re looking for a bit more, choose the 16-kilometer route. This distance combines the Jaomerdal with the Steilrand and offers a great balance between effort and enjoyment. Ideal for recreational walkers who want just a little more challenge while keeping things relaxed.

The 25-kilometer route is for the seasoned walker. This route takes you along the Maas River, through forests towards Belfeld, and over the Steilrand with its impressive elevation changes. A sporty hike that challenges you physically, while still offering plenty of moments to rest and recharge in the Jaomerdal.

The ultimate challenge: 40 kilometers

New this year is the 40-kilometer route—the longest and most complete route of the Berden Hike. This is no casual stroll, but a serious challenge for which preparation is definitely recommended.

The route follows the Maas River towards Blerick and Baarlo, along wide open fields and quiet roads. Along the way you’ll pass the impressive Kasteel D’Erp, after which you cross the Maas by ferry towards Steyl. Via the nature between Belfeld and Reuver, you continue on to the Maalbeek, before being rewarded with the demanding yet beautiful landscape of the Steilrand. The final part of the hike runs through the serene Jaomerdal, where you can finish the last kilometers in peace on the way to the finish.

The 40 kilometers is designed for walkers who want to experience everything the Berden Hike has to offer: long distances, variety, silence, history, and impressive views.

Which distance will you choose?

Whether you’re coming for a relaxed walk with the family, a sporty day in nature, or a real physical challenge: with distances of 7.5, 16, 25, and now also 40 kilometers, there’s a suitable route for every walker.

Whichever distance you choose, one thing is certain: the Berden Hike lets you experience North Limburg at its very best.
